Our Mission
Our mission is to help animal care specialists improve animal welfare by offering naturally safe enrichment.
The PureMade Story
We have been working alongside animal care specialists in life sciences and zoos since the 1970s, providing feed, bedding, enrichment program consulting, product development and more.
Over the decades, we kept coming back to a simple truth: everything that goes into an animal’s enclosure matters. It matters for animal welfare, research integrity, and conservation. And ultimately, it matters for the future of animal and human health.
Facilities carefully evaluate the feed, bedding and water animals receive—even the air they breathe. But we noticed one important part of the environment was often overlooked: enrichment.
Most enrichment devices used today were originally developed for the commercial pet market, not specifically for research or conservation environments. As a result, they can contain materials and substances that simply don’t belong in these highly controlled settings, including potentially harmful or toxic substances and known carcinogens.
We Knew There Had to Be a Better Way
So, in 2025, we created PureMade.
Our goal was simple: give animal care specialists a safer, more natural and more sustainable choice. Made simply from cellulose and vegetable oil, PureMade enrichment devices are designed specifically for research and conservation environments. By eliminating a long list of potentially harmful substances, PureMade helps support animal welfare while reducing confounding variables that can compromise research integrity and reproducibility.
PureMade is hypoallergenic and made from natural, food-grade, GMO-free, nontoxic components that are ethically sourced and traceable through the human food industry. The material is COâ‚‚-neutral, biodegradable and compostable, made from certified renewable inputs, and certified to strict European child-toy safety standards.
But finding the right material was only the beginning.
Collaborating With Experts on Safer Enrichment
We collaborated with animal care specialists at leading universities, pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations to design and test our products and, most importantly, listen to their feedback. We beta-tested shapes, sizes, durability levels and colors. We put the material through the wringer to make sure it could stand up to the realities of day-to-day use in a research facility.
And we’re proud to say it did.
Today, animal care specialists have another choice—one created specifically for the environments they work in and the animals they care for.
